What is ST52-3 Steel ?

Ambhe Ferro St52 steel infographic

ST52-3 steel round bar is a type of low-alloy, high-strength steel that is also referred to as HSLA steel. St52 is a German grade (DIN 17100) equivalent to S355 in EN standards. The “St” stands for Stahl (German for steel), and “52” represents the minimum tensile strength of 52 kgf/mm² (~510 MPa).

It is widely used for manufacturing various industrial as well as domestic products and applications. It is equivalent to Indian IS2062 E350 grades of steel and EN S355JR and JIS SM490A. The ST52-3 round bar is known best and appreciated for its application-specific design, durability, dimensional accuracy, workability, weldability, excellent corrosion resistance, and long service life. These round bars are used in heavy-duty industries for several purposes.

The material is known for its excellent strength, toughness, and ductility, making it suitable for use in various applications. The chemical composition of ST52-3 steel includes elements such as carbon, manganese, silicon, phosphorus and sulphur.

One of the key properties of ST 52-3 steel is its high yield strength, which allows the material to withstand high-stress levels without undergoing significant deformation. The material also has good impact resistance, making it suitable for use in applications that involve dynamic loading or impact. Additionally, ST 52-3 steel has good weldability, making it easy to join using various welding techniques.

Further information on ST52 steel

ST 52-3 steel is commonly used in the construction industry to manufacture various structural components such as beams, columns, and plates. The material is also used to manufacture mechanical components such as shafts, gears, and gears. Additionally, it is used in the automotive industry to manufacture various components such as frames, suspension systems, and drive shafts.

The manufacturing of ST 52-3 steel typically involves a process of casting, followed by hot rolling, annealing, and normalizing, depending on end use. The material is then cooled and tempered to achieve the desired mechanical properties. The steel is then inspected and tested to meet the required specifications.

ST 52-3 steel is available in various forms, including plates, sheets, bars, and tubes. The material can be further processed through machining, cutting, and welding to create the desired product.

One of the advantages of ST 52-3 steel is its high strength-to-weight ratio, which makes it an ideal material for use in applications where weight is a critical factor. The material has good formability, making it easy to fabricate into complex shapes. It also has good machinability, allowing for easy and efficient machining operations.

ST 52-3 steel also has good corrosion resistance properties, making it suitable for various environments. However, it’s important to note that the corrosion resistance properties of the steel can be improved by applying a coat of paint or other protective coatings.

What are Limitations of ST52-3 Steel ?

There are some limitations to using ST 52-3 steel. The material is not suitable for use in applications that involve high-stress levels, as it may exhibit brittle behaviour under such conditions. Additionally, the material is not ideal for use in extremely high-temperature environments, as its strength and ductility may be adversely affected at such temperatures.

Applications of ST52-3 Steel Bars

ST52-3 steel round bar is widely used in manufacture of cold-work dies, punches, cold cutting scissors, drill bushes, gauges, wire-drawing dies, coining dies, draw bench boards, drawing dies, thread rolling dies, etc.

ST52.3 Steel FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about ST52.3 Steel

What is ST52.3 steel and what is its modern equivalent?
ST52.3 is a low-carbon, high-strength structural steel designated under the older German DIN 17100 standard. Its modern European equivalent is S355J2 (EN 10025). It is characterized by excellent tensile strength and weldability, making it a standard choice for heavy engineering.
What are the mechanical properties and yield strength of ST52.3?
ST52.3 generally offers a minimum Yield Strength of 355 MPa (N/mm²) for thicknesses up to 16mm. The Tensile Strength ranges between 490 and 630 MPa. These properties ensure the material can withstand significant stress without permanent deformation.
What is the typical chemical composition of ST52.3 steel bars?
The chemical composition typically includes: Carbon (C) max 0.22%, Silicon (Si) max 0.55%, Manganese (Mn) max 1.60%, Phosphorus (P) max 0.035%, and Sulfur (S) max 0.035%. The manganese content provides its high strength.
Is ST52.3 steel easy to weld?
Yes, ST52.3 (S355J2) has excellent weldability due to its controlled carbon equivalent. It can be welded using standard methods without pre-heating for most thicknesses, although pre-heating may be required for very thick sections to prevent cracking.
What is the difference between ST52.3 and ST37 (Mild Steel)?
The main difference is strength. ST52.3 (S355) is a high-tensile steel with a yield strength of 355 MPa, whereas ST37 (S235) is a standard mild steel with a yield strength of roughly 235 MPa. ST52.3 is used for heavy-load applications, while ST37 is used for general structural work.
How does ST52.3 compare to EN19 (4140) steel?
ST52.3 is a structural steel primarily used for welding and construction, whereas EN19 (AISI 4140) is an alloy engineering steel used for gears, shafts, and bolts requiring heat treatment. EN19 is harder and stronger but much harder to weld than ST52.3.
Can ST52.3 steel be heat treated or case hardened?
ST52.3 is typically supplied in a "Normalized" condition. While it is not designed for Case Hardening (like C20 or 20MnCr5) or Through Hardening (like EN24), it can be subjected to stress-relieving annealing if machined heavily.
What is the hardness (Brinell HB) of ST52.3 steel?
ST52.3 is not typically sold to a specific hardness standard, but in its normalized state, the hardness usually ranges between 140 and 180 HB (Brinell) depending on the thickness and cooling rate.
Is ST52.3 suitable for low-temperature applications?
Yes. The "J2" in its equivalent S355J2 indicates that the material has passed a Charpy V-Notch impact test at -20°C with a minimum energy of 27 Joules. This makes it safe for use in cold environments like offshore structures or refrigeration plants.
What are the common industrial applications of ST52.3?
It is widely used in: Mobile equipment (cranes, excavators), chassis construction, bridges, railway wagons, pressure vessels, and hydraulic components where high strength-to-weight ratio is essential.
How is ST52.3 machined compared to 1018 or A36 steel?
ST52.3 is tougher and slightly harder than 1018 (Mild Steel). While it machines well, it produces longer chips and requires slightly lower speeds and higher feed pressures than standard mild steel to obtain a good finish.
Can ST52.3 bars be gas cut or plasma cut?
Yes, ST52.3 is highly suitable for oxy-fuel gas cutting and plasma cutting. Due to its low hardenability, the cut edges generally do not become excessively brittle, allowing for subsequent welding or machining with minimal preparation.
Is ST52.3 available in hollow bars or tubes?
Yes, ST52.3 is a very common grade for Mechanical Tubing and Hollow Bars (often designated as ST52 or E355). These are frequently used to manufacture bushes, cylinders, and rollers to save machining time compared to solid bars.
What are the testing certifications required for ST52.3?
Authentic ST52.3 material should come with an EN 10204 3.1 Test Certificate. This certificate validates the chemical analysis, mechanical properties (Yield/Tensile), and Impact Test (Charpy) results specific to the batch purchased.
What is the density of ST52.3 steel?
Like most unalloyed steels, the density of ST52.3 is approximately 7.85 g/cm³ (or 7850 kg/m³). This constant is used to calculate the weight of bars or plates: Volume × 7.85.
